ATF Flush DIY...

Post by awake »

I am a little confused and need some help regarding an ATF system flush for my 2001 V40:

Basically, where is the point at which the transmission enters and exits the cooling system?

I thought it was at the upper driver side corner of the radiator, but I do not see it there. Also, there should be one line entering the cooling system and one line exiting the system; which line is the one exiting the system? The is the port I would like to hook up to in order to perform the system flush.

Thanks for the help!

Okay, I found the hoses. I did the obvious and crawled up under the vehicle to trace them from the tranny to the cooler. They actually connect at the base of the cooling system.

So is the line that connect the cooling system to the top of the tranny the "return" line? I am thinking the outgoing line is the one that runs from the base of the tranny to the cooling system.

If anyone could verify this it would be greatly appreciated.

You're right - the fluid flows from the bottom of the transmission up to the return at the top. I would use the bottom hose as your flush point.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the help!

And bye the way, do you know what size tubing I need to purchase in order to attach to the transmission output line?

1/2" inner diameter is what the 850/newer-generation V70's use. I'm not entirely sure about the V40, but I'd guess it's probably the same.

I just picked up a piece of black transmission hose from Advance for $3. I don't see the need for clear hose; when the hose starts coughing, shut the motor off and refill the transmission with the amount that came out of it until the fluid runs red and clear again.

Sounds good. Hopefully I can do my V40 and Tundra in the same day?
