95 turbo- AC compressor seized, temporary bypass?

Post by jbrown122 »

Hello all.
The past week or so my AC compressor (1995 850 Turbo) has been smoking and making awful noise. I intended on taking care of it this weekend. I had to drive the car.
Leaving work, I started it, it made a LOUD screech and I shut it off. Looked at the belt and when the car was cranking or started, the belt wasn't moving. My guess- The compressor finally seized.

My question is. Can I put a smaller belt on the car for now, one that doesn't go around the compressor? I will be replacing the compressor probably within the next month-can't afford it now.
If this is possible, does anyone know the size for a smaller belt?

Many thanks.

Belt for compressor bypass is Gates K060495

I've got it on my 96 right now. Fits like a glove and works like a charm.

Thank you! Did you order it online or buy it at a store?
If I can find it at a store that would be great

So the clutch is totally seized? You can't disconnect the clutch's electrical connector and get it to freewheel? Others have reported success with Delco 6K495 or equivalent on 1996 models (should be the same on yours). According to VIDA (had to look at European cars, as all US spec cars had AC), the correct Volvo part for a belt "AUTO.TRANS W/O A.C." is 9146844.

6K495 is the "other" number, the AC Delco or Master Pro. I wouldn't trust a cheap belt in my Volvo, even a temporary, but it should fit the same. I ordered it online, but, you should be able to find it at a parts store, probably the AC Delco. It just so happens to fit a whole bunch of late model Ford and Mercury vehicles.

Agreed, if in doubt, OP should call their nearby Volvo dealer and order the belt from the Volvo p/n I posted above...that'll make sure it's of the right quality/type/size, etc. VolvoWholesaleParts (an MVS sponsor) does show that p/n in their listings, so a US-based dealer can order the belt.

I found this repair last night, it must be open season on AC compressers. I went and got a Gates K060495 belt. As it was the specifed one for the Merc Crown Vic 5.0 liter. Dayco, ACDelco specs were the same, but where I bought it had this specified number in stock, othere stores had the "495" number. Upon getting home I got it on in about 10 minutes. It was tight! To do it again, which I hope I won't after I replace my AC comp. I would get one which was 1/2 an inch larger, a "60500", as I was at the end of the tensioner stroke to install it! The "495" to "500" is a number for diameter, which is almost 1/2 an inch it seems.

Just a hint to someone trying this, it is snug! But it works!

I spent half of the day trying to find this post to get the correct part number for the bypass belt. I will chime in and verify that a Gates K060495 works but you need to follow the old style belt routing.

I just love it when your kid hits the door from school and says, "Dad, can you look at my car"? His compressor clutch bearing had seized and somehow he drove home from school - about 150 miles or so and didn't snap the serp belt. It did sound terrible.

I'm going to pin this post to make it easier to find.

I didn't find mine was too tight going on, though the tensioner did ride a little higher than on the normal belt.

It does need a good tug to seat fully in the crankshaft, but then I just held my right hand still and routed it under the (locked-out) tensioner, over the steering, then down around the alternator with my left hand, leaving a short loop between my hands that went neatly over the idler pully, which just happens to have a smooth face to carry the back of the belt. It slipped right on with no fuss at all.

I did this from above, with the car on the ground, and the ECU box removed. IMO even with the hassle of the static strap, that's less trouble than peeling back the fender liner, and gives better access if you're just doing a belt.

This old-style routing has less of the belt wrapped on the alternator at any moment, so IMO, tighter is good.

If in doubt, spring for the Volvo part.
