MASSIVE OIL LEAK around the back of the cylinder head!?!?!

Post by MalibuLx311 »

I have a 1992 240 with a 2.4L engine. The other day my oil light came on when i started my car, I turned the car off and noticed A LOT of oil on the ground. When I checked the oil, it wasn't reading at all. After searching for the leak I think I found it. There appears to be a block off plate missing on the back of the Cylinder head. This is located on the back of the cylinder head, up against the fire wall, with 2 bolts holding it on. Does anyone know what this part is call, where I can find it or anything about it?

It sounds like you;re talking about the cam seal retainer.

i'm not sure what you call it, but if there is about a 2" round hole in back of the engine just below the valve cover, it blew out because your flame trap got clogged. You need to replace or clean that out (and then do it regularly like every third or fourth oil change) or you'll just blow the seal again. I bought a new flame trap assy and then cleaned the original so I always have a clean one on hand.

Thanks, that was the problem. I cleaned out the flame trap and the whole PCV and the car is good and running again :D
