2001 Volvo Transmission - Buy a New Transmission or Rebuild?
Re: Should I buy a new tranny, have the old one rebuilt, or
I still haven't taken it to the dealer, but did take the title and VIN and found out they have maintained it for 6 years. The software upgrades are all in place, and I have all the maintenance records. The service writer spoke to one of the mechanics in the shop and he said the tranny in the car is fine that its a 5 speed automatic and that transmission is not the one to worry about. Of course I mentioned that I had done research online and told them I heard horrible things about this particular model years transmission. But I just looked at the console it has P D N R so drive has 5 speeds all in 1? I'm not looking for someone to feed and clothe me, but is there a definitive write up or database that will expose the true nature of this particular problem. Is there only one model of tranny that had the inherent problem? I really want to trust the dealer on this but.....

You're in the 2001 to 2007 forum, ALL Volvos after 2001 have a 5 speed automatic transmission and THAT IS the one to worry about if you have year 2001-2002
Count or feel the number of times it shifts up.
Or...perhaps reading your owners manual would help! (read the specs in the back of it)

Ok one more simple question, I want to check the transmission fluid level and have located the stick or whatever you wanto call it, the yellow plastic tip comes off and reveals a dip stick that has a place for a flat head screwdriver, do you screw it out? I have tried to grab it with my fingers and pull it out, but it doesn't want to come out.
There is a little clip that holds it in place. The clip faces to the radiator it's welded to the tube it is a spring like zig zag shaped clip.
If you get a light or just feel down there you'll see or feel it. I've check my trans enough that I can do it with one hand, thumb pushes back on the clip and my first two fingers lift up.

Hi, I'm in a similiar transmission situation. Except I drive an S60 and I wasn't lucky enough to get one given to me for free. At the moment I'm leaning towards a rebuilt Volvo transmission from the dealer, about $4000. I have had different quotes from independent transmission shops, one was almost as expensive as the dealer and the other used a rebuilt valve body out of Detroit. My friend had the same problem with his S60 and drove it a year until getting it repaired. He used an independent Volvo shop who had found a place that was able to solve the problem, apparently. He drove it 30,000+ miles with no problems until he sold it. However, I spoke to lot of other independents who said the rebuilt transmission from the dealer is the only real fix. The dealer just called me today and offered 10% off parts and 10% off labor. I was just going to drive it until the transmission plain died, but 10% off a $3000 plus part seems a good deal. The service transmission light has not come on yet and the ATF fluid is a nice red. But I have 122,000 miles and delayed/harsh engagement drive to reverse (Valve body and internal failure, so I'm told). So I know I'm facing impeding doom. I'd love to know what decision you make regarding the transmission repair and if anyone else has any advice I'd love to hear it?

Sure is especially when dealer cost is about $1800!

Well when you put it that way, sounds like a great deal... for the dealer! Problem is, all the Volvo independents I spoke to would buy the transmission from the dealer. So they were more expensive. What would you suggest? I live in Denver.Sure is especially when dealer cost is about $1800!
I found a place online called BOSS transmissions, $2308 for a rebuilt transmission. Doesn't include labor, but there's a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty. Has anyone had experience using BOSS?
Wow. When I called around I was unable to get any of them to budge off their 5k+ quotes.JRL wrote:manofsteel05 wrote: but 10% off a $3000 plus part seems a good deal.

I spoke to a shop yesterday about having the valve body rebuilt in the transmission for $1500 or $1900 for a new volvo valve body. Has anyone tried this method and did it solve the problem? Is it better to get the new volvo valve body or should I just have the original rebuilt? My car has 122,000 miles and the transmission fluid is red with no signs of metal.
