window is off track

i have a 2001 v70 xc and the window will not roll down. the motor works, but it seems as if the window is off the track since i can manually lower it about an inch or so. when i press the button to roll it down there is a good deal of popping and it does not do much. i can manually push it back up and gently hit the button to roll it back up, but it literally sounds like the window is going to shatter. does any one have suggestions on how to get this window back on track. i do have the door panel removed but shooting in the dark to try and figure it out. thanks in advance.
