2001 S60 Whining - Suspect Crankcase Ventilation Box

Post by bishop1976 »

I recently purchased this Volvo used. I've had it for about three weeks and it has started to whine and idle rough periodically. The dealer diagnosed it as the crankcase ventialtion box. They estimated it at a $700.00 repair. I almost went through with it until they came back with about $1,500.00 more dollars in repairs and wanted a $250.00 diagnosis fee. To top all of this off the parts were on backorder. I called a dealership out of town and they offer a cleaning service for this problme that runs about $100.00. Problem is they are too far away and I'm told the back pressure from the ccb being stopped up can blow seals.

Thsi is the nicest vehicle I have ever owned. My wife gets all the new cars. I would like to get it fixed but I dont want to get taken to the cleaners. My mechanic is more than capable of making these repairs. He isnt a Volvo mechanic but he has been repairing my vehicles for years successfully. I trust him. until I can do the right thing it is parked in my driveway.

My questions:

Where can I get a repair manual for this vehicle?
Does the manual cover this repair?
What parts do I need to purchase for this service?
Is there a reliable online parts dealer who would be able t ship everything I need?
Do you reccomend cleaning the unit or replacing it?

I appreciate any help I can get. I'm excited about being a Volvo owner.

The noise is suction pulling air IN through the seals. The vapor/liquid separator box on that vehicle has a crankcase pressure regulator on top of it. When the diaphragm in the regulator ruptures the crankcase gets manifold vacuum applied to it and it makes a kazoo noise as the seals squeal from the passing air. It needs to be fixed soon. The suction of air by seals goes away when driving as vacuum level goes down and crankcase vapor flow increases as you drive.
How many miles on car?
Do you know much about its past maintenace history?

the only manuals with any details are in Vadis, which was volvo's tech info/diagnostic system and is available online at ebay.
The manual covers this.
I don't think the components are serviced, only the whole box with the crankcase pressure regulator valve attached.
Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin has been good to many on here for genuine parts. I think if you get this part for that year model car it is going to be genuine Volvo regardless of where it is obtained.
