Need new tires and have no clue which kind

Post by wdhouser »

I am in need of new tires. I have a 2001 V70 base (195/65R15). I unemployed so I am looking for a good value. Quality plus price. I've done quite a bit of research and read reviews and still do not have a clue as to which ones I should get. I don't want to spend much more than $80 each. I will spend more if there are rebates associated with the purchase.

Any input would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Bill

I use these on my e30 for street rubber and they seem pretty decent:

480 treadwear, I believe a 50k warranty and they stick pretty well.

There seems to be a wealth of rubber in that size for not a ton of $.

I'm replacing Sumotomo's. Got 55K on a 70K tire. They were very noisey too. Why does Volvo only recommend rotating from front to back as opposed to rotating in all 4 directions? I understand you have to do that if they are directional, but what about when the are symetrical (non-directional)?

Don't overlook buying used tires. Try to find matching pairs.
Cris-cross rotation went out with bias ply tires.

Used tires are OK if these criteria are met:

1) They are not older than 10 years (the build date is sometimes stamped as a six digit number)
2) They haven't been traded in because of an out of round situation causing vibration
3) They have no visible flat spots and have even wear.

Old tires go very hard and will be dangerous in cold, icy conditions and not too good in the dry, either.

I would rather buy a Chinese tire with warranty than a used old tire with questionable age and condition.

For $80 you should be fine because of the 195/65/15 size. You won't have any high performance costly choices.
Maxxis are great tyres and very cost efficient.

My Tire Rack promotions page changes periodically on its own, so check every week or so and you might catch a rebate from whatever manufacturer you decide on. I get a small cut of anything you buy if you click through to them via those ads.

Here's more about buying from Tire Rack.

Thanks in advance for your consideration to click on those ads to buy.

And to end the shameless plug and actually help, Tire Rack has tens of thousands of reviews written by their customers, so you might find what you're looking for by poking around there.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link

Any consideration for Bridgestone or a new tire with excellent reviews from HanKook? I can get the Yoko Avid for $83. But I can't find any good reviews for this tire.

Here's a good review for you: I LOVE THEM! My Yokohamas are the best tires I've ever had - great traction in any condition, quiet, and they haven't been wearing around the edges like all my BF Goodrich's have.

I don't like Bridgestones. They're not good in wet, and awful in snow.

Michelin MXV-4's are also good, but very expensive.
