95 850 won't start

Post by Volvo850Racer »

I am having a similar problem.
Currently No spark on any plug and the injectors are not working.
All other system are working.
Some times the car will start and run great but most of the time when it is turned off and you try to restart, it will not start. I had it to a reputable mechanic as I feared for my wallet at the dealer. He did not fix it but it just happened to run for him 2 days in a row so I picked it up. This car was made in March or 1995. It has an ODB II and the under the hood diagnostic with the lead and button. The last time it was at the dealer they said the engine management was not returning any code. The car ran for a year like this. Now I need to see the code and can't. Other systems report codes 1-1-1 but the engine managed will not even return a 1-1-1.
The mechanic I took it to said he used the ODB II but the Dealer said it could not be used :? I have a multitude of spare parts and swapped out some relays one at a time with no change. I reseated the ECU and TRANS module all the fuses and relays and most of the connectors under the hood.
I have no clue why this car would run until I turn it off but then not start. This was an intermittent problem but now it is not starting at all. Any ideas?
Mark

I cleaned the body ground next to the battery and the one next to the coil. I then reseated ALL the connectors I could find under the hood. It started and worked for a day. It is now DOA again. This is driving me nuts!

You're not getting spark or fuel? Have you jumped the leads between the 1 and 3 sockets on the fuel pump relay w/ the key in pos. II to start the fuel pump and verify its operation? I'd recommend picking up a multimeter to start testing for excessive resistance in portions of the electrical system. Let us know if you find anything w/ poor connectivity or excessive resistance and I can provide the correct ranges for the specified device.

Definetly no spark. I can hear the pump running but have not verified myslf yet. What was really odd was the last time it started it cranked like it was not going to start and just as I was going to stop it started :? Do you recommend a certin type of contact cleaner. I was going to do it all again just for grins. I would love to have a white 95 turbo. I would paint it like the BTC... Thanks, Mark

I found a code now that I know to use A2 in place of A6 on the ODC. AllData says that the ECM connector to the CMP shoulc have battery voltage on pin 3 or the left most contact looking at the connector with the release wire up. Is this correct? I do not have any voltage. It then tells me to find the fault in the harness between connector A36 on the ECU and pin 3 of the ECU connector to the CMP. If this is correct I need to know where A36 is on the ECU connector as they do not provide a location. I also have 0u on pin 1 and 5 v on pin 2. Thanks Mark

Looks like the CMP is dead. I removed it to see if it was reparable. I can't see how this sensor could go bad since it is basicaly just a magnet. Anyone have any idea if these go bad after time or did I just get lucky? After I check it again I plan to disect it to see it I can repair it. Anyone ever tried it?

Thanks

Re; the "it's just a magnet" comment, I replaced mine myself after I took it to a third party shop and they said that was the code that they read. (of course, they also said it COULD just need a tune-up too (was at 100k miles, purchased w/ 43k mi.) so after their $500 later (including new sp wires, cap, etc.) and continuing stalls, I changed out the CMP myself. I noticed it would always stall while travelling along at normal speed right after I would go under an AMTRAK railroad line (under a bridge, high tension power line and magnet?). Of course, this was my route home from work daily so it was also the same amount of time the engine had been on after a cold start. Anyway, changing out the CMP worked. I much later went on to get stalls while decelerating (coming to a stop or turning while breaking) which was solved by cleaning my ETM/TB regularly every 3 months or so.

Thank you so much for sharing this.. This makes me feel better. My wife is pushing for me to get rid of it and I do not want to as I bought it new and it (I feel) is just a teenager. It is 11 years old but has been pampered and only has 84K on the ticker. My coworkers think it is new and want to know why I would spend so much for a car. I answere only their first question, the secound is self explanitory!

Thanks again,
Mark

94 850 n/a myself with ~140-150k on it (failed odometer gear). Bought it used in '98. I picked up a used Acura TL recently so when the next big thing goes on the 850, she's gone... Seems like when they hit that 125k mile wall, things happen, but I guess you could say that about any car...
