the C clip that sits in the machined groove in driveshaft end pops out and holds axle in. When the C clips expands inside the axle gear in diff it can get off to one side. When you try to pull axle out the C clip is too far out in the one spot and doesn't readily retract back into groove on axle for it to come out. If at this point you push in, rotate 1/4 turn and try pulling out again and repeat the 1/4 turn attempts in the same way, usually the C clip will shift and you'll find the point where it will come out. If you pry really hard and bend the C clip then the game is over. It will not come out until gearbox with axle in it is removed and case split and then the C clip can be tapped back into the groove and pulled out. I have seen the axle pried hard enough to break the C clip but the remnants of C clip fall into trans and may or may not be able to be retrieved with a magnet after the pieces get over to the sump area within reach of the drain plug hole.
