Yet Another Cruise Control Question

Post by vaniwaar »

I have a 2001 S40 and my cruise control does not work. I switch it on, the light on the dash comes on and then I press '+' to attempt to engage it but nothing happens. I have tried pulling up on the brake pedal while simultaneously pressing the '+' button and the cruise does engage. This leads me to believe that either the switch has gone bad or the vacuum line is bad or disconnected. I verified that the vacuum line is connected at the switch but don't know where to look under the hood. I would also think that, if the vacuum line were disconnected, the vacuum pump would continually run.

This is just a minor annoyance right now and I don't want to purchase a new switch unless I know with a high likelihood that the switch is what is wrong. Thoughts?

I wouldn't quite know how to do that. I have an electrical meter I use rarely and usually is is for something trivial...

If your cruise engages when you pull back on the brake pedal, it's the switch. It likely only needs adjusting. Get a good grip on it and push it toward the brake pedal arm. On one of mine it clicked into another groove making it tighter. On one of my other cars I placed a bread bag clip with two sided tape on the arm under the switch. It provided enough preasure to activate the switch.
