radiator light/loud noise

Post by kimb »

Well...two flat tires two days in a row and now 2 new car problems...I'm at wits end! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I bought my first vovlo 850 a 1997 about 3 weeks ago used. It has about 72k. A week after I bought it the radiator light started flashing on when I accelerated and then going off as soon as I took my foot of the gas. The coolant level is fine and does not appear to be leaking at all. Today when I got in the car it sounded loud. There is a loud rumbling sound coming from what sounds like the right front area of the car. I have a very limited knowledge of cars and I know I'm going to have to bring it in somewhere. Would you guys suggest dealing with the two problems seperatly...(midas muffler for one and a volvo specialst for the second.) Or maybe someone out there has an idea about something I may be able to check myself.
Oh, did I mention that the washer fluid doesn't squirt either.
I want to love my car but this has been a challenged relationship since day one!!
Please help me believe in Volvos again...

Coolant light: mine does the same thing when it's low. I add some water and it goes away. The system will naturally lose a few ounces per year.

Loud rumbling: does it happen when moving? Does the sound change pitch or intensity with speed or with engine RPM or both? When turning?

Washers: here's from this page:

Headlight Washer Fluid Valve Fix
Matt I ended up replacing the T valve that splits the washer liquid stream to the headlight wiper arms' squirt heads. I found this to be the defective part of the system by blowing into the various tubes that connect the headlight washer system. I ended up removing the passenger headlight but this is not necessary. If you do, it's three bolts that hold it in, and getting the bottom outside one out was helped by taking out the top bolt on the hood latch and swiveling this back a few centimeters (you'll see what I mean).

Note: When I found the culprit, the lower (on my chart and first photo, below) T valve, I removed it and called Barrier Volvo in Bellevue, Washington and began to describe it. I said,"I need a T valve, it's for the headlite wiper squirters..." and the guy cut me off..., "It's $9.85 and in stock." He knew exactly what I was talking about. This means they see this problem all the time. The trick to this whole repair is to find the valve. I suggest doing this: follow the tube from the drivers headlight by feeling for it in the clip retainers near the horns (last photo). Make sure you have the right line by playing push/pull with the tube where it comes out to meet up with the wiper.

From there, follow it to the left, toward the passenger side, unclipping it if you need to. I found that I could pull the T valve and two other tubes out in front of the radiator to see that I had the right piece. If you do it this way, you won't have to remove the headlight, not that it helps that much anyway. You may have to unfasten the passenger side washer fluid tube from the wiper to give slack for this operation.
