Air hissing noise in cab?

Post by sudlabnivek »

I went to look at buying a 2001 S60 and when the car was running a hissing noise like air was leaking under that dash by the pedals. The noise comes and goes and does not increase with acceleration or decelerartion. Could it be the break booster? I am not sure. Help me out, sorry for not having anymore info

Yes, it's almost certainly the brake booster (or, if you're very lucky, a vacuum leak in the hoses, but generally, if you can hear it in the cab it's not a hose). I seem to remember that these early cars had problems with them, but even my 2008 S80 did that (thank goodness for warranties, it's not a cheap item).

brake booster leak. Part is $200 and you can do it yourself if you are handy. Discount $400 from the sale price for the fix.

Also do a search on tranny failures on '01-'02 MY volvos.
