Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Question about S80s..

Post by stevemac76 »

Hi guys, Im thinking of buying an S80 and have seen a 2001 model that I like, my question is, how can I tell the difference between the 140hp engine and the 170hp one? the owner claims it's the latter but I'd like to be sure...

Many thanks

Steve ;)

I don't know if it was offered in a 5 cylinder model in England but in 2001 it was only the 6 cylinder models here

get the 6th and 7th characters of the vehicle ID. Those digits are the engine model.
17 = B4204S2 V40 2.0l FWD
38 = B5244S4 S40/V50 2.4i FWD
39 = B5244S7 S40/V50 2.4i FWD
41 = B5202S 850/V70 2.0i FWD
51 = B5252S 850/V70 2.5i FWD
52 = B5254T4 S60/V70 R AWD
53 = B5234T3 V70 T5 FWD
54 = B5244T5 S60 T5 FWD
55 = V70 FWD
56 = B5254T S70/V70 GLT FWD - 1999
56 = B5244T 2000 -
57 = B5252S 850/V70 2.5i FWD Turbo
58 = B5244T3 S60/V70/S80/XC70 2000 -
59 = B5254T2 S80/S60/XC90 2.5T FWD/AWD, V70 2.5T FWD, XC70 AWD
61 = B5244S S60/V70 2.4 FWD
64 = B5244S6 S60/V70 2.4 FWD
65 = B5244S2 S80/V70 2.4 FWD
67 = B5244S4 C30/C70 T5 FWD
68 = B5254T3 S40/V50 T5 FWD/AWD
70 = D4192T3 S40/V40
71 = D4192T S40/V40
72 = B5252T S70/S80 2.5TDi FWD
73 = D4192T2 S40/V40
78 = D4192T4 S40/V40
85 = B8444S XC90/S80 V8 AWD
97 = B6299S S80 2.9 FWD
98 = B6324S XC90/S80/V70 3.2 FWD/XC70 AWD
99 = B6304T4 S80 3.0 T6 AWD

5 cylinder 2.4 w/o turbo is the 170 HP and 2.0 w/o turbo is the 140 HP.

There is a more specific list for S80 of that year but I could not find it readily though I believe I have a pocket data book for 01 model year around somewhere.

they are both 2.4 litre engines and both 20v as far as i know, but how can you tell the difference between the 140hp and 170hp models?

I can't find any reference to a 2.4 litre that is 140 HP available in a 2001 S80.
What is the engine code from VIN (6th and 7th positions in VIN)?

I believe Steve is from Northumberland, UK, so I know there were smaller displacement engines available for the S80; looking at the Europe partner group, the 2001 S80 was sold with various 5 cyl engines: a 2.0L turbo (180HP; B5204T5; engine VIN 49), a 2.5L turbodiesel and a 2.4L turbodiesel. The 140HP is a naturally aspirated 2.4L engine (type B5244S2; VIN 65), and if memory serves, the 170HP is the naturally aspirated B5244S (VIN 61, I believe). The engine VIN (6th and 7th numbers in the VIN) is absolutely the best way to tell.
