do the XC70 have STC by default?

Post by carboncow »

I'm finding mixed info on this topic. Someone stated all XC70 have STC but I noted every XC70 I have looked at doesn't have the STC button on the center console like our 2001 T5 has.

Is the STC standard by simply cannot be turned off on the XC70? Would one not want the off switch in certain high slip situations?

as of 2001 XC70 has 4 wheel STC standard. There may be a model year with the switch but most do not have it. Even if it has the switch the function is not totally turned off.
The rear diff was reduced in size with the platform change in 2001 and stc may protect the smaller diff by suppressing wheel spin and reducing engine power.

makes sense. event Honda's real-time AWD has their version of STC and although you can turn it off they put a temp sensor in the differential to disengage the rear drive if the system is over heated...and it does! So I understand your view.

So it sounds like a simple system in the XC70 unless the DTSC was purchased in later years.

From 2011 XC Manual:
Introduction
The Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system (DSTC) consists of a number of functions designed help reduce wheel spin, counteract skidding, and to generally help improve directional stability.
Traction control (TC)
This function is designed to help reduce wheel spin by transferring power from a drive wheel that begins to lose traction to the wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle (on the same axle). TC is most active at low speeds. This is one of DSTC's permanent functions and cannot be switched off.
Active Yaw Control (AYC)
This function helps maintain directional stability, for example when cornering, by braking one or more of the wheels if the vehicle shows a tendency to skid or slide laterally. This is one of DSTC's permanent functions and cannot be switched off.
Spin control (SC)
The spin control function is designed to help prevent the drive wheels from spinning while the vehicle is accelerating.
Under certain circumstances, such as when driving with snow chains, or driving in deep snow or loose sand, it may be advisable to temporarily switch off this function for maximum tractive force.
WARNING
The car's handling and stability characteristics will be altered if the spin control function has been disabled.

Temporarily switching off Spin control
1. Turn the thumbwheel (1) until the DSTC menu is shown.
2. Hold down the RESET button (2) to toggle between DSTC SPIN CONTROL ON/OFF.

I read on one post that STC is like TRACS (similar but not) and TRACS never had an off switch too. I'll assume there is no procedure for the RESET button for STC like mentioned in the DSTC write up.

STC is TRACS using the ABS pump and valves to apply select brakes to shift torque at up to 25 MPH/ 40 KPH but adds torque reduction via the ECM changing timing, throttle, and even cutting some injectors. The torque reduction is available at all speeds.

TRACS has a switch on all early models offering it but it also lost the switch on later models.
TRACS alone went away about 2008 and STC is the starting point now.
The P1's got the DSTC switch replaced by integration into the message center in 2006 (C70 had to have the previous switch spot for the top controls and all P1's were impacted) and P3's have it there on all models on that platform.
