Erase CEL! 2002 Volvo S80 T6

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Erase CEL! 2002 Volvo S80 T6

Post by bronson1111 »

I took my car to three different mechanics and they say my car is running perfectly.. but for some reason my check engine light is always on! I want to figure out a way to just get rid of it I don't care what I have to do. It is an eye soar for me.. Even if I have to go into the console and scrape the light sensor off of the circuit board...... any suggestions?

Thanks!

hahaha remove the light in the dash. Just joke :)
When "check engine light" is on, there is/are error code/s. Read them out and tell us the codes.
The "check engine light" is there not to make us angry, you know. I'ts there to warn us about a problem.

did any of the mechanics read codes or attempt to clear the light?
The light can be turned on by some transmission faults and the codes in trans control module has to be erased to get the lamp off.

Haha I know it is supposed to tell me what is wrong.. It is a code PO422 and PO420. The mechanic said it is the catalytic converter. In my state we don't have to have a catalytic converter so I am not even going to bother fixing it. The car runs fine.. I just don't enjoy looking at that light. It is embarrassing when I am driving girls around! haha

Bad idea to keep driving it. The cats are probably getting clogged which will eventually lead to loss of performance and economy. Also, they may heat up to a point where they become a serious fire hazard.

Ignore the light if you like, but if I was you id get the cats replaced with straight pipes to be on the safe side

Just to develop the boosted5cyl's idea about the pipe - there are resonators made exactly for that reason - to replace the catalyc converter cheaper, but not making the car noisy...
I own a S40 '97, too. I did the replacement with pipe, but i couldn't drive it more than a day and put a resonator.

p.s. i'm not sure that "resonator" is the right word for that but I hope you got the idea - it's kind of silencer.
Good luck
