850r doesnt start......sometimes

Post by iluvmyslut »

1997 850r, true mileage unknown. Rarely it will fire up on the first start but usually it takes about 5 minutes of cranking. Sometimes it will give a premature start, it will kind of idle for a second or two and then dies. Fuel is good, had that checked out. As of yesterday I replaced distributor cap, wires and coil yet the problem remains. Took it to auscandia in Herndon,VA today and they said camshaft position sensor, 2 hours later they said that the new part they put on was defective and that they cant get a new one until tomorrow. I bought and installed the part myself, still no dice. ( I found it really odd that the old cp sensor that they claimed they took off has been untouched, you can just tell it hasnt been touched). I get no check engine light but once the car finally starts it runs beautiful without any issues, starting it is the issue. I am hitting a brick wall here, any help or suggestions? thanks guys

Check out your fuel pressure before starting. There's a schraeder valve at the end of the fuel rail.

No fuel pressure (usually due to a bad check valve at the fuel pump) = no start.

It is not your camshaft sensor if it runs at all. You may want to look at coolant temp sensor, perhaps the car isn't putting the computer into the correct mode. Also, I'm sure you checked all your plugs, wires, rotor, etc... just to make sure they are making good contact.
