Rear center bearing squeek

Post by Rosco »

Hello,
Took my 99 V70 XC in to diagnose a crazy squeek coming from the rear end when driving in reverse. The mechanic said he is 80% sure that it is coming from the rear center bearing on the drive shaft. Is there anyway to take this driveshaft off and replace the bearing without the expense of a new driveshaft? I understand this might take some machining as it has a fixed yoke. Is this possible to do? Thanks for all your suggestions.....

My 98 had a bad u joint squeeking when I bought it, thought no big deal just get the joint and change it out.......Wrong! Volvo trys to sell you the whole drive shaft! for a grand! I pulled the shaft and kept driving the car, that is not a problem. I have looked into it and you can buy a joint that will replace the stock one, you will have to grind the stakes down that hold the stock one in and after installing the new one tack weld the replacment, sounds crazy but it's realy not and a good mechanic will have no problem making it happen. the u joint part number I found is as follows, Napa Precision joint number 341/1095139-A, I have not done the job yet as I just researched it today. Any driveshaft shop could fix you right up. So don't even think about buying that ripoff shaft that volvos trying to sell you. I love these cars and always will but that was a shocker to find out what the company is doing! That is just plain WRONG. By the way the center bearing is in the center of the car, but I would bet you have the same problem I was.
