1997 Volvo 850R hard time starting

Post by iluvmyslut »

Hey Guys,
New here but have been a volvo fan and owner for some time now. I finally found a black on black 1997 850R and just picked it up this morning. I am also an owner of a very clean 1997 turbo wagon. The car has had one owner and was in California for majority of its life. I picked it up from some shady dealer in Maryland for $1000. Car is in overall great condition. It has about 130k but as with all 850s the odometer is done and will need replacement bearing so true mileage is unknown. As it sits right now the top motor mount is done, its missing the rubber alltogether and the car has a hard time starting. From what the dealer told me there is an issue with a coil. What he did is on the cold start he unplugged the wire going to the coil creating a 1/2 inch gap and it fired up after several tries and ran beautiful (even AC works) but once it warms up, it wont restart again after shutting it off and once its cool again, it takes some time to start it back up. As I said once it turns over there are no issues with driving it, I made a 100 mile trip just today. I am planning on doing a full tune up anyways but on a tight budget for a few days. I am suspecting one or several of the following parts: wires, plugs, coil, distribuutor cap and rotor or cam shaft positioning sensor. Before I got crazy with spending money, does anyone know or is familiar with the issue I am having??? The guy also mentioned that he swapped out a coil from another volvo but who knows, the "new" one might be faulty too.

I took the wire off of coil and held it near it while my buddy was cranking the car, i was getting a spark so I am beginning to think that thats not it. I replaced ignition cap few hours back, didnt have the right size torx to swap the rotor. Still didnt want to start but fired up eventually, drove it down the street and it cut off entirely, one of my positive battery terminals snapped off, I replaced the hook on the side of the road and it didnt start up again. Battery began to take its toll so had to have it towed 1/2 mile to my house :D

Check your battery, grounds, and battery cables. Also, check the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, could be going bad.
