If it's anything like the 850/v70 you would need to first remove the power steering pump, then remove the alternator.
The placement of the bolts is tricky as some of them undo from the belt side through to a threaded plate. You'll probably fudge it and remove too many bolts as I did when I needed to get to the compressor. Still it will be a learning experience. Take lots of photos at every stage and mark things; take your time and you'll be fine.

It is easier. The air duct from air cleaner to core support is removed and after battery is disconnected you remove electrical leads and then turn tensioner in order to remove belt and last, the bolts securing the alternator.
That car has the electric power steering pump system so the alternator is not below anything.

I also had a £750 alternator repair price. (350 unit/450 labour). I nearly scrapped my car because of it. I left my car outside my house for a month trying to work out what to do. Very distressing.
Luckily, I found a small family local garage in the end (staines), installed a Denso 150amp unit for £190 all in. (unit was £119+vat). I was so pleased i asked them to give it a full service too as it needed that, (my car has never seen anyone other than volvo slough - never again) . £500 all in, alternator, belt and full service.
Well chuffed.
Dont go to volvo - dont give them the satisifcation.
