1994 850 wagon with " Dreaded Flashing Arrow"

Post by magicom »

Am new to forum and could not find specific answer. The flashing arrow has gone on and I have lost lower gear (?2nd). Have had this problem in the past and have had PNP switch replaced but problem resurfaced. Was then told by two mechanics that a selenoid in the tranny was bad, and could not be replaced because it is sealed (would have to replace entire tranny). The problem "fixed itself" in the warm weather, but now in the cold has come back.
Transmission fluid levels are ok and light brown. Have moved the gear position selection switch back and forth 15-20 times. Have looked at the gear selector switch near battery and that seems visually ok.
Any suggestion would help.

I had the same problem on an 850 that was caused by my rocking the car from forward to reverse and having the shift lever stop between two locations. A code reader will clear the light and limp home mode. If no code reader gisconnect the battery for a couple of minutes. You need the radio code and also will need to reset the clock.

Since you have a '94, you can use this guide to check and see what the stored code and most likely problem is.

If I get stuck in snow, I rock the car back and forth to clear the car out using "D" and "R". Before shifting back and forth btw the two positions, I always ensure that I pause briefly at "N". Isn't this the right way?

Thanks.
