The temperature guage at the instrument panel is itermittently failing. Tried to locate the sensor and the appropriate wires but had no luck. I know this is a bit stupid but exactly where is it?

Time for a new ECT sensor (or check out the wiring).
It's located under the thermostat housing - follow the upper radiator hose over to the engine - the ECT is the copper plug at the bottom.
Change out the thermostat too as a preventative measure (they're cheap!)

This is great! Picture and all.
Fiddled with the wiring and found that the connector to the sensor was dirty and corroded. Cleaned and sprayed with wd40 and the problem is solved.
