S80 Fuel Pump Relay Question

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 Fuel Pump Relay Question

Post by zeiglerr »

I've spent a day diagnosing my no-start problem and found:
- I can power the fuel pump directly and it runs and the car will start
- There is power to fuel pump fuse #33
- The fuel pump relay tests good but the fuel pump doesn't cycle on
- I can jump terminals 3 & 5 where the relay plugs in and the fuel pump runs

It looks like the CEM isn't fully closing the relay. Is there anything else I can do other than towing the car to the dealer??
This is my daughter's car and she's out of work, so I'm trying to help her out. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Reid

No message in the message window about immobilizer or anti-theft?
fuel pump operation is stopped if the key is not recognized.

No immobilizer messages, and the car just stopped on the road like it was out of gas. Also no OSB-II codes.

I just checked the voltage from the CEM that latches the fuel pump relay and it's 10.8V. The relay latches at about 5V on the bench, so there's either not enough amperage out of the CEM to latch the relay or a poor ground. CEM time? I give up.
I'll let you know what the dealer says. - Reid

I made a simple jumper with a toggle switch to go across terminals 3 and 5 on the CEM (what would be the lower horizontal lugs on the relay) It's not switched with the key which is why I added the toggle switch, so the fuel pump isn't running with the car off. I can switch the fuel pump on and start the car, so I'm going to drive it to a shop about a mile away that has a system that's supposed to emulate the VIDA system and can replace the CEM code if needed. There's an XC70 recall involving CEM software that covers basically the same problem I'm having with the fuel pump not working because the CEM won't latch the relay. It's probably the same "feature" that's part of the Immobilizer, but caused by a software error. I'll be very happy if it's just software and I don't need a CEM. I'm 100% certain that my Volvo dealer would be replacing the V-V-T solenoid, ETM, MAV, fuel pump, etc. A very sad thing to have zero dealer confidence. I'll keep you posted.

I took the car to my local indy shop that has an Autologic system and they were able to read all of the codes but unable to reprogram the CEM. There was an SRS code-00D3 that could be causing the problem. Very nice guys and no charge for this visit! So I bit the bullet and had the car towed to my Volvo dealership about 15 miles away. They called me and said my SRS computer under the console needs to be replaced for $1,100+. I had already checked it to make sure it wasn't flooded by coffee, or something, and the boot was intact and connector clean. I've seen Volvo SRS modules reprogrammed with Autologic on YouTube, so I'm going to bring the car home and check back with the other shop.

When I picked the car up from the Volvo dealership, they had flashed the SRS module and plugged the relay back in, and the car is running fine. Total bill was $55.00. They warned me that they just fixed the symptom and probably not the problem. The SRS module was getting a signal that the car was in a crash and shut down the fuel pump. When I was working on the car, I found 4 or 5 partially empty bottles of water, sports drinks, etc. under the driver and passenger seats. (young adult driven car) Now I'm thinking that something may have spilled and gotten into an SRS wiring connector. For now, the car is tunning fine with no codes, and I have my jumper in the glove compartment, if needed. There will be no more bottles of liquid under the seats!!
