Help....Strange Problem... Dashboard lights..

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Help....Strange Problem... Dashboard lights..

Post by tejas24478 »

I have 2000 Volvo s80 T6.

Recently I started having strange problem.

When I start it, dashboard shows all lights and indication properly..
but after 3-4 seconds the everything disappears on the dashboard.
It does not show any digits (mileage, trip mileage, temperature etc)...
The whole dashboard seems to be turned off...!
Moreover, the auto gear light also stays at the same place..
So when I move from 'P' to 'R' and then 'D' the light that indicates
the gear position dose not move at all and stays on either 'P' or 'R' ..
The gears work fine though...

Anybody has faced this type of problem... please help...

Make sure your battery is good and terminals are tight with no corrosion.

I had the same exact problem on a Dodge Caravan I used to own. Everything on the dash went black but it still ran fine. Turned out it was a weak battery. Replaced the battery and everything was OK again.

Tejas24478 I have all those problems now and now my dash stays completely blank wih the exception of the "check engine" light being illuminated as of a week ago. That was not the beginning of my problem though. For months I have been seeing various warning lights starting with "brake failure stop safely ASAP" after pads and rotors were replaced and then the dreaded ABS, brake and traction control lights. The problem was diagnosed by Volvo dealer as a defective ABS control module. I have a 99 s80 t-6 with turbo with over 216k miles and was told by numerous mechanics including the Volvo dealer that when this computer console goes bad it will send all sort of error messages throughout and will have the same effects that we are having. I have been reading forums on this site specific to the ABS module, replacing it and whether that will correct the problems or if the CEM also needs replacing.

You may want to check out some of the other forums on this site about the s-80's shortcomings.

Also, could be ignition switch: try this...while engine is running, wiggle the key and if your dashboard lights-up, this is your colprit. Replace...easy to install.
