Metallic sound on cold engine

Post by dahaakaa »

Hi. I own 2001 Volvo s40 1.9 Turbo. When i start engine, i have some metallic sound, like from diesel engine, but after engine warm up, sound gone. oil was changed 3 k miles ago and it's start from this time, but iit's same type of oil, 5W-40. Car have 104 k miles. Any idea what is can be ? According to oil book i have same type of oil from 50 k miles.

If it's matter, it's US version, with LPT

Is your oil level"full", or at least above the "add" mark?

If not, bring the level up close to "full" before looking further.

It might be the O'ring on the oil pick-up tube in the oil pan. If it is not completely sealing while cold it can cause ait to be sucked in and make your tappets to "clatter" until the oil is warmed and expands the seal. Then the air can't get in and the clattering goes away.

If this is the case it is not good for your engine. This is my best idea and the most obvious thing I would look at. (You have to "drop" the oil pan and then drop the suction tube and replace the o'ring)

Good luck!

I have the same problem. Metallic clicking sound. Happens only when engine cold, disappears after 2-3 minutes of idle running.
Sound frequency goes with RPM, also increases it's intensity a little when u hit sharp on gas pedal.
It is metalic very short sound.

Can someone tell what it is?

If the noise goes up and down with the rpm's then it's lifter tick, basically every car I've owned with hydraulic lifters have ticked including my v40. if the tick is does not change with rpm it could be injector tick

It's strange that the noise began with with the oil/filter change. If all else is good and oil level is correct, I would just remove that filter you installed and put a brand new OEM filter on. Even if the current filter is Volvo or Mann, change it again. Can't cost much and you'll be sure you don't have a (rare) defective filter. Rule out the easy/less expensive things first!

Makes sence that it stated with an oil change. The oil would be thicker so it's harder for the lifters to fill up when the oil is cold. I myself and a few others help remedy the tick by adding a bit of ATF to the crankcase and make sure to always buy a oil filter with a check valve to help keep oil in the head to avoid dry starts.

Me and my friend looked closely, and it doesn't sound like lifter ticking, it comes from behind the engine where exhaust system and turbo charger is. It is not annoying thing, but i found on other forums it might be exhaust gasket. The smallone Image similiar to this one.

Also just out of curiosity, what fuel economy do u have? Mine goes from 8-12l/100 in city driving is it too much?

Maybe you could record the sound and include it for us to hear. Your latest note makes it sound more like the heat shield or exhaust flange being a little loose. If it was the flange you'd likely get some exhaust noise/smell, too, but not always and especially if only one of the fasteners is a little loose. But the heat shield/mounting screws would make something of a rattle/jingle until the engine heats up enough to expand the pieces and stop the noise.
