I have a 1991 740Gle. I love the car and see its potential but I hate that it is gutless right now. What are the best things to do
to my motor/car (B230) to give it some power and drivability? I frequently drive paved and non paved narrow mountian roads and if I can do this right I'd want to enter it into Rally Races. I'm interesting in know the budget way, what parts should I get from other Volvo's. And if I was to spend a bit of money what should I get?
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thank You,
Dave

I've been looking at a couple things and I found something interesting. Volvo penta motor AQ171C is supposed to be a 2.5L B230. With a 16v head and a different crank. Does anybody know anything about this? If I can swap parts? How do I get mine to a 2.5L?

REALLY?!? With all the "experts" on here no one has any idea what to do to my motor to make my B230F faster? Maybe I'm on the wrong Forum!
If you really want to improve that motor, replace it with a 5.0 liter Ford V-8 and tranny. Such swaps are common enough that you will find a lot of info on the web. Your current motor lacks a turbo, which very much limits the upgrade potential.
FWIW, I had a Volvo salesman tell me that the 16V motors were quite troublesome. But, he also didn't have any of those cars in stock at that moment and he is a car salesman, so the truth is .................................?

The swap I thought was popular calls for small block Chevy; supposed to fit right in there. I saw one pass by. I wasn't nose heavy and had the Chevy rumble (as I remember it from those days).

http://volvord.com/ - 302 Ford in Volvo, he's on MVS Forums every now and again... "Volvord". Or put a Volvo 4-cyl turbo in her. I don't know the engine code. Those have room for more hp.

I worked for and retired from Volvo Penta. Yes, they had 16V heads but they are marine heads and exhaust manifolds. This means the heads have extra ports for the coolant to go through the exhaust manifolds to keep them cooler within the confines of a boats' engine compartment. Find a good used Turbo 740 or 940 engine and get a simple "turbo plus" kit (used to be available from Volvo dealers). The combo of the turbo engine WITH intercooler and the turbo plus kit will get you plenty of extra boost. and in the mountains at any altitude over about 3000 ft no real loss of HP.
(we did this with our company cars and they became much more fun to drive. The kit added about 10% more power to the turbo engine, and the turbo engine was about 15% more than the NA engine)
