1977 245 starting problem

So I have a 77 Volvo 245 that's been giving me some grief... Most of the time she starts right up, but occassionally it's a no go. no real rhyme or reason. I decided to swap the battery with the one on my 83 and now the lights will come on but when I turn the key it just shuts everything off.. Ideas?

at first I thought it might be something in the fuel delivery system
