'98 V70XC --- Extremely Frustrated
Well, the only thing I can do is to remove the intake or exhaust manifold from the donor car, locate the TPS sensor and put it on the 'good' (extreme sarcasm) car. I really hate to do that given the extensive labor involved - but, since a.) I'm stranded and b.) mechanics are expensive, I have no options remaining.

It's not that difficult.
Did you try the MAF trick?

Yes, I tried disconnecting the connection and starting, but achieved identical results. I did, however, replace the upper half of the air cleaner assembly containing the MAF sensor, so I've ruled that out as a possible cause. (What are the chances that both MAF sensors on identical cars would be bad?) I am first going to remove/clean all electronic connections under the dash and under the hood to see if that doesn't generate some results..... I am seriously dreading tackling the TPS sensor - feelings of impending doom appear whenever I think of having to do that!!!

The gas cap "code" that Advance Auto gave you is very likely an EVAP system leak code and could very well be related to the EVAP purge valve that jblackburn suggested looking into. I would start troubleshooting with that.

The TPS is nothing to fear, really. I just finished replacing mine and it appears you have some skills. It's located under and attached to the throttle body and held on by two 7mm bolts. I removed a couple of hoses connecting to the underside of the idle control valve, and the plastic portion of the big hose running up near the radiator. Get a good light and it's a pretty quick check. But it doesn't sound like that's your problem.

Do the EVAP test, though this sounds awfully similar to when my MAF died. I'd guess that the EVAP was the culprit given the codes. Do you know, are you running an original Volvo gas cap? If not, that might be your problem, the aftermarket ones mess with the EVAP something awful.

I'm really sorry about your problem. I hope you've made it to where you are trying to go.
I had one Volvo at my shop that was acting like yours but it was a newer model turbo I think. It had loose motor mounts and every time you went to hit the gas, the motor would torque and pull one of the intake tubes off of the turbo creating a massive air leak the computer couldn't compensate for. When you let off the accelerator, the tube would pop back into place and idle fine again. Just a thought.
Please let us know what finally happened.

I'm not going to beat the AAA horse, but here in Texas, where everyplace I go seems to be a minimum 100 mile round trip, but very often 200 miles, so I but the AAA Premier , $125.00 a year. It gives me one 250 mile tow, another 100 mile tow, plus all those other benefits, so when I'm up in Austin, and 85 miles from home, I don't have to feel quite so hopeless when my old (15 years old, 176,000 miles so far) car starts to bobble. I have seldom used the benefit..BUT...
Incident #1: When I lived in the mountains in Wyoming...a long way from a Mazda dealership, I blew a head gasket on my new Mazda 4x4 starting it at 40 below (nice and crispy!)...still in warranty, but the dealer wasn't going to come get it, but AAA towed it to Idaho Falls, about 100miles away to that dealer, where the work was done under warranty.
Everyplace you drive "out west" puts you along way from anyplace.

FWIW, I think TPS, mine broke on my old Mazda, actual broken (via mouse) wire. Start and idle fine, press on gas pedal and stall.
Tps in that car was a pain but overall easy to replace. I replaced it after having fixed the wire just for piece of mind. I don't know how bad it is in the Volvo, but it is a big deal when it comes to fuel delivery. Have you pressed the valve on the fuel rail with the ignition on to see if you get a good strong squirt out if it (be careful) just to rule out a fuel pump problem. All of a sudden like this though, I'm betting TPS.

Or maybe a falling apart cap/rotor. Quick check them too.
