fan trouble

Something is going on with my fan. It cuts on and off at idle. I can also hear it try to come on. Is this most likely a relay problem or fan problem.

Which fan? The cabin HVAC blower or the engine cooling fan?

The engine face does not always remain on.

It's the engine cooling fan. It seems to try and come on for a second then stops. At times it keeps doing this. At other times it catches fine. I'm thinking its the fan itself, not a relay.

You may have the low speed not working. When that happens the a/c pressure goes high enough to trigger hi speed and then hi speed runs briefly and pressure drops and it reverts to low speed but low speed isn't blowing so the cycle repeats.
The fan relay is just under RH (passenger side) end of the fan shroud top plate. It slips out to the rear. The low speed trigger is yellow white and the hi speed is solid yellow. Make sure the Y-W hasn't slipped out of the grey connector. The plastic around those bullet connectors turns to goo with age.
If that is all good then disconnect the large gauge wire 2 wire connector. Use a jumper wire between battery and touch the connectors one at a time. You should be able to get fan to run at low and hi speeds. If this is all good then get a fan relay.
