front wheel hub removal question

I have a '98 V70 AWD.
Yes, I've studied Volvospeed's pics and descriptions and another write-up on this site.
My question is about removing the control arm.
The pictures on Volvospeed show the removal of bolts holding the control arm on, my car does not have the same bolts.
The control arm pivots on pins that rotate around an assembly attached from the other side(the engine side) of the frame.
Those bolts are not really accessible without an extension for my air gun. Should I get an extender and remove them or do I have to remove the swing arm from the hub side (a la removing the sway bar and ball joint(seems more risky somehow)).

The AWD control arms are a totally different animal than the FWD models. The factory manual procedure calls for lifting the engine to get to the bolts but the factory manual tends to make stuff tougher than it really is.

I would suggest taking it apart at the ball joint but I have never done that without destroying the rubber boot around it which pretty much means a new control arm and the same procedure to get to it.
