850 Steering Rack Fitting

Post by OhioTec1 »

I am currently in the process of installing a new steering rack in a 94 850 wagon ("55" VIN, 2.4, 5 speed). I got a re manufactured rack (the core is an OEM Volvo core) from Auto Zone; the center bracket won't fit (there is a line in the way of the bracket to rack nut and bolt) and the bracket next to the pinion housing won't line up with the engine mount (Only off by mere millimeters)!

Is it possible that there is a different between the rack in an auto and in a 5 speed? I provided Auto Zone with the year, make, model and engine and they ordered me a replacement based off that information. Other than the transmission, I can't think of anything else that could affect the fit of a steering rack.

If not the case, it it possible that the bolt installation order is critical to the fit of the part? Also, does anybody recommend replacing the fasteners with the steering rack?

Thank you,
Andrew
