Oil Dipstick

Post by allnewgene »

The handle came off of my oil dipstick. I was able to get a new one from fcp groton, but now I am wondering if I am getting a proper reading when I check the oil. Can someone measure the dipstick on the 1998 Volvo V70? Thanks!

What color is the stick?

All S/V70's should have the orange one.

No, I don't have the old one. I assumed the new one was the correct size, but recently my son thought he overfilled the car with oil, but the car actually seemed to run better and the gas mileage (maybe coincidentally) got way better. Wish I kept the old one...Seems to be a common occurrence for it to break. Guess I could go to the local parts/dealer store and see what they have on the lot. Just thought I'd ask here first!

Interesting...I put 6 qts from a brand new oil change in mine and it only goes about halfway between the marks. I'm beginning to wonder if that is a correct level, since when I fill it back to the max level, it just goes down again within a few hundred miles and then STAYS there for the next thousand or so.

As long as you have the orange handle like mine, you should be good to go on a V70. 850's used 2 different types/tubes depending on the year of the car.

I have a dipstick from a 98 S70 NA engine that I swapped into my 96 850. I just measured it (It is the same as the one from my 96 850):

From the tip (bottom) to the o-ring (top) it measures 19-1/8 inches

From the tip to the highest mark (the fullest) it measures 1-3/16 inches
