check engine light and codes P0422, 0442, 1171, 1332

Post by BJ740 »

My 2000 S70 Volvo has the check engine light on, it's time for inspection so I had Autozone check the codes. They got these nos, but they aren't on the list of codes listed here on this site. What will I have to replace? Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg or can my husband replace a few things to help so I don't have to park this car for a while? Help if you can please.

If you Google the codes, you'll find them on a few other Volvo sites. I've randomly selected some threads of other sites to indicate other helpful Volvo sites that are out there:

Thanks. I did find a few places that listed the codes while I was waiting for replys. Seems like I may need to probably replace the sensors, gas cap, and see where we go from there. Might let the mechanic run the codes again and replace a few things at a time if my husband doesn't have time to get into it. Thanks. I love these sights and trouble shooting before I get the verdict with a big bill so I feel more secure in the diagnosis.

Depending on the maintenance of the car, it may help to reveiw 'Stage 0' steps and that may just take care of some of the codes.

I wrote a reply but since I don't see it for some reason, I'll repost it. I took the car to the mechanic I use, he said the codes at AutoZone were generic and he wanted to put it on his diagnosis tool. (He got the same codes and comments I'd seen elsewhere.) He said to start at the cheaper options to remedy sometimes ghost codes. He sent me to the Volvo dealer to get a Volvo gas cap, not one at Auto Zone. $38, what a bummer. But the light stayed off and I drove 60 miles home and it seemed ok so I got it inspected and it passed fine. However, within 10 miles the light came back on! I took it back to Auto Zone and this time we had one code only, 1771. At least now I have a year to find the issue and can ride legally till then! Our next move is to smoke the system and see if there are any cracked or leaking hoses that would cause this issue. Hopefully, not needing a catalytic converter. Any other ideas or hints from anyone else to solve the check engine light issue? I don't like it to be on.

Well at least the gas cap took care of the 442 code, so thats $38 well spent. I had the 442 code two weeks ago. I also purchased the "blinged out" gas cap at the dealer for a whopping 42 bucks!!! I looked all over the cap for its gold plating, but found none. It fixed my problem, so I cant complain (well, maybe just a bit).
