1993 850 GLt 174K. Started a few days ago. When I turn the car on the AC & REC lights blink about 18 times then goes out. Any ideas what this code is for.
Thanks

The climate control system has logged an error code. Check your codes to see what it is.

Most parts stores will read your codes for free but they will not usually reset them. Get them checked and report them back.

Come on, he has the little black box under the hood next to the windshield fill lid. Most autoparts stores won't know what to do with this '93 model. Anyway, go to those boxes, and take the lid off of them and you'll see 2 boxes...one marked "A" and the other "B." With ignition switch off, unclip the lead wire (the one that looks like a probe on the end of it) and insert it into socket "1" of module boxe "B." There is a red light there that will blink and you have to read the number of times they blink. Now go turn your ignition on and then go back to the boxes and push the button on box "A." (have a pencil or pen ready.) The light will begin to blink in a series of 3's, such as 2 blinks, then one then three, etc. Press the button again for about a second and there will be another series of 3 blinks. write these down as 2-1-3 (for first example). Do this until the series of blinks are the same series of blinks as you got the first time. These are your codes that you need to report back here. Then we can help you. All codes have to be read before the codes are reset. To reset them, hold the test button down for 5 seconds then release it...the LED light will go out. Then turn the ignition off. If you turn the ignition switch on again with the test lead in socket 1 of module B and press the test button and there are no codes, you'll get a 1-1-1 code from the blinking light. Hope this helps.
I have a Haynes Repair Manual (you can buy it at most auto parts stores for the 850 and it costs less than $20) which has all of this information in it, including the codes...very usefull and highly recommended.

2-1-1 = Driver's side damper motor position sensor open circuit or shorted to 12 volts.
4-1-4 = Driver's side interior temperature sensor inlet fan shorted to earth (ground).
To reset, hold the test button down for 5 seconds with the test lead in socket 1 (and ignition on). Then turn the car off and let it set for a few seconds, turn back on and see if you get the codes.
The temp sensor inlet in a little hole located above the grab handle above the door on the driver's side. Although this sensor is fragile, you can use some compressed air or vacuum cleaner to clean it out...this may be all it needs. Not sure of other repairs on this system if the codes come back. Hopefully others will chime in.

I had a 414 code show up on my 95 850 just once but fortunately it went away after a reset. I suspect this code happens if the fan motor overdraws on current at startup on a cold morning. However, on the other hand, your fan could be snuffed and needs to be replaced. A DIY job if you don't mind pulling the dash apart.
