Ignition module(amplfier)

Post by turbo no/go »

Just a quick note to anyone having stalling problems, and from what I've gathered from this forum and others that seems to be quite a few.Mostly older models of course,'82-'92- 740's, 760's, 240's, etc...

I have an '85 760Turbo w/intercooler. B-230FT 4cyl. 2.3L. As of today it is officially fixed and running for the first time in 2 months. After replacing the external fuel pump and filter, in-tank pump and screens, air mass meter, fuel pressure regulator, intake hose, ballast resistor, distributor, hall sensor(rpm sensor), plugs, wires, battery, air filter, and today the ignition amplifier(module) which it would seem was the real problem to begin with.(occasional stalling, hard starting)

I would suggest to anyone having stalling problems, especially if it stalls and then restarts after a few minutes, but won't ever restart immediatly after it stalls, to replace the ignition module. All the other parts that I replaced were all original parts and needed to be replaced anyway, the wiring for the hall sensor was really bad.

I plan on replacing the fuel pump relay as well, I've heard to many people say if they're over 5 years old not to trust them, mine was replaced in '95. I've found them from $30.-$40. online, not to bad. :D

be very careful when changing the intank pump the wires that run down to it are easily broken and then you have to replace the whole tank level thing and bung for the gas tank ($105) Other than that it is fairly straight forward.

See my posting March 16:

This item may help those in need...I have an 87 740 that has been experiencing periodic stalling while driving. Car has always started good. After sitting roadside for a few moments the car will start after turning over several times. I replaced plugs, wires and cap..still occurred.

The problem was found in the fuel pump/ignition computer relay found under the ashtray with the fuses. Upon taking out relay and removing the relay cover I found three suspect soldering points on the circuit board..they break down with age. I resoldered the points and replaced the relay and the car has not stalled since. Working great.

I purchased a new relay for $80.00 CDN and keep it in my glove box in case more solder joints breakdown when I am on the road.
