Ok Guys, I need good solid opinions!
What is considered the best years for the 240's and the 740's, and why?
Recently bought a 850 turbo wagon and love it. Now I want an early model 240 or 740 sedan (GLE)? I'm looking at 89's to 94's just because there seems to be alot of them here in NC.
Thanks for all your help from an old mopar guy!! Fantastic website.

Best Years for 240 and 740???
well, I'm gonna have to say the 80's 240 are the best, cause that's all I've had
. Well, I had others other than 80's models: My first Volvo was a 75 242DL, damn thing took me everywhere! Sold it and got an 81 244DL, has been in the family for about 10 years and now it's sitting at a parking lot cause I think the oil pump went out...still runs but makes some noise. Then I bought a 69 144 with dual carbs, should have kept that one, I still see it in town cruising around
Then I got an 87 244GL and traded it to my buddy for an 86 Trooper
...go figure. And now I got me an 83 242 GLTurbo, it's still in the revival process, but I think this one's a keeper!! I believe the best volvo is your own volvo!! He he he...love this site!!!!!!

Given that I have only owned one Volvo, a 1986 740 GLE, my experience is rather limited. However, I think they are all pretty good. I have been told to stay away from the V6 engine as they had some major oiling problems. The 4-cylinders, however, are more reliable and longer lasting than an old Slant-6 Mopar. The pre-1989 4-bangers don't have an EGR system, making these less smog-laden.
I prefer the 740 to the 240 because the 740 is an overall bigger car. At 6'-4", the 740 gives me plenty of leg room. This car is as comfortable to drive as my 300-K. The turning circle of the 740 is so tight that I don't have to make three-point-turns to turn around. Of course, the acceleration does not compare to a Big-Block, but neither does the gas milage. And parts availabiltiy is fantastic. Every little part I have needed for my Volvo has been in stock or available.

I like the LH Jetronic Cars. I think they ran from 86-92. Mine are both 88's. The later models that have a check engine light can help you diagnose a problem but some consider them a nuisance. I have a 740 and a 240 I like the 240 a little better but they are both fantastic cars.
Wetbackzo, wish I could find a 240 or 740 turbo here, but they seem rare in this area.
Kmaniac, I wish I could fit a slant-6 in there, I'd be in heaven.!! We have a turbo slant six turning mid 9's in 1/4 and soon to have one in high 8's. (pics available if interested) I have already learned to stay away from the v6. I looked at one and besides the poor design there is no room to work.
Thanks for your input.
Wojeepster, what are the LH Jetronics cars?? I'll start researching but if you have the info let me know. I have an 850 turbo wagon, but want a sedan to play with. I'm leaning toward the 240 gle at present.
Please keep info coming, anybody with an opinion. I'll appreciate all help.

luv the smell of high compression V8's at the line
I believe the LH jetronic are the ones that have electronic injection, opposed to the Constant Injection or CI like my 83 Turbo...There aren't many Turbos here either, I guess I lucked out on this one and paid dirt for it too
. I've seen many Turbos when I go to El Paso which is only about 45mi from where I live. If I see one for sale I can forward the info to you and maybe you can come pick one up?? I know I've seen a couple for sale over there...let me know if you're interested.

For the price it would cost me to get to and from El Paso with the car I could build a nice one here
. But if you see a great deal let me know.
I'm going to look at a turbo this week ind in Charlotte, NC.

How can I tell the LH Jetronics from the Constant Injection by looking?
I'm an old car mechanic so the CI sounds more trouble free to me, less things to go wrong and repairable without an electronics degree or special tools.

CI injection has a "fuel distributor" on the passanger side right behind the head lamp (RH). This is mounted on the air box and the air filter is in here also. LH jetronic has none of this, just four electronic injectors on each cylinder with harness connectors on them. Hope this helps.
Gonna look for some pix for ya... I've had cars with both systems and have never had any kind of problems with them.
