2000 2.9 misfire and pedal positions

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 2.9 misfire and pedal positions

Post by yuckuJackD »

Hi
The car is VOLVO S80 2.9 200hp 2000y. B6294S

History: I've cleaned the ETM (throttle), but however it died before two weeks :(
I found another - a used one and putted it in the car.
I got a friend who owns a DiCE, so i made some tests of the new/old ETM:
Online diagnostics(diagram) with accelerator pedal, ETM sensor and the needed ETM position sent from the car. Everything seems to be OK. Both diagrams for the ETM were almost like one - thats how it shoud be :)

But a few days after I got a engine light ON, so I took the DiCE again and I red the error codes:
Missfire (global error)
Missfire 6 cyl
Accelerator pedal position?!? - wtf are you crazy? you've never made that
Brake pedal position - same as the above. Deamn it's a stupid button - pressed/not pressed how could it throw an error

I started to diagnostic the missfire problem:
exchanged the 3-rd and 6-th cylinder's ingnition coils, expecting if the 6-th coil is bad the next time i got a missfite it would be on 3-th cylinder.

a few days after - light on and the same errors. This time i exchanged the ignition spark plugs, again 6-th and 3-rd

a few days after - light on and the same errors. This time i exchanged the fuel injectors of the LPG system, again 6-th and 3-rd. I drive all the time on LPG, so the gasoline injector is not interesting at all, because i use them only when starting the car. I start the car, wait on place the coolant to boil to 50 degrees and switch to LPG. Never got check engine while i was on gasoline, that's why I belive the gasoline injectors are OK, or in worst case - they are not the reason for the 6-th cylynder missfire.

Sunday i've got a trip. I noticed that when a push the car sometimes the cruise control went to off (not stopped, completely off - no light "cruise" on DIM)... I know that the first thing that stops working when there is problem with the car is the cruise control, because to be engaged it must be sure it won't happen accident, you know - pushing the car when it's not necessary, when dstc tell's you're slipping it stops again and so on and so on...
At the end of my trip i got a engine light on.
Took the DiCE again and again same error codes.

Now the questions:
1. What could be the reasons for throwing "missfire in 6-th cyl"
2. Accelerator pedal - is there any sence to remove it and try to clean it or so...
3. Brake pedal - isn't that the sensor (button) telling the car whether it's pressed or not. Or there is another sensor, measuring the presure/position like the accelerator's pedal?
4. Could the replacement of the ETM cause all or part of these symptoms (I don't belive it could but...)

Thank you all for your help

Is the LPG a factory system or a added system?
Factory LPG engines use different valves and valve seats to stand the lack of fuel lubrication on intake valves when they contact seats. You could have an intake valve problem on #6. check compression cold and hot.

There is a sensor on brake booster for pedal height. It is the backup for brake light switch to be sure cruise control goes off when brake is applied in the case of brake light light switch failure. The code would be for the sensor on booster.

fix brake sensor and the accel pedal sensor code may go away. I have had APM (accel pedal module) codes with brake pedal sensor codes and checking APM would give good results and I'd replace the brake pedal sensor and drive car and no APM code would return.
