98 S70 Passenger Door Latch Stuck

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 and all of sudden the passenger door will not open from the inside. I think that something must be off the henge in that I sometime hear a rattling sound in the door. Any advice or thoughts? I have been told that the door may need to be taken off to look inside.

By the way, I am single and rarely have a passenger; hence, the door has not been opened much over the years.
