That's it - and just the gasket that sandwiches in between there. It's the price of a double cheeseburger - one of the cheapest fixes you can do on one of these cars

If the cam seal is blown out, it's often indicative that the engine has been venting crankcase pressure out the seals from a clogged breather system. Check for smoke out the oil dipstick on a warmed up engine.

Excellent info, and great video! I will check PCV tonight. I may as well change that turbo oil return line seal anyway, since I am down there with the turbo coolant lines.
Thanks again.
Jim.

Well,
I checked the dipstick on a fully warmed up engine. No smoke, nothing coming out at all, so that looks like a good sign. I also ran the heater full blast for a while on a fully warmed up engine, checked both passenger and driver carpet up by the firewall, no leaks, so that is a good sign.

Right now, my plan is to dump coolant, change the turbo cooling hoses, change the turbo oil return gasket (leaking or not), and see if I can find the oil leak (either rear cam seal or turbo cooling line gasket, it would appear), flush the cooling system (just bought distilled water), and refill with the Volvo coolant (50/50). I will let you know how it goes.
Jim.

Jmail, I would check the IPD for the following kit to give you an idea. Part # 30750783 (Oil Sump O-Ring & Gasket Kit). If I'm not mistaken, that same pipe that you are referring also has a sump O-ring (that goes to your oil pan) It looks exactly like the Engine Oil Dip Stick Tube O-ring (Green or orange) rubber ring. Since you are going to replace the gasket on one end of the pipe, do the other end with the sump O-ring.

Juan62,
Thanks for the tip. I think its a great idea to change out both ends for seals on that.....But I am part way into the job and it is a real pain in the #$%^!. I can't move the turbo oil drain tube in any direction. I have the end of it off of the turbo, and got the old gasket out, but I am having a real hard time getting the new O ring in....I will start a new topic on this and reference this on. I don't seem to have much of a leak, if any, from the seal where the turbo oil return line goes into the oil pan. Which is good, since I don't see how to change that short dropping the whole transmission. The AWD trans and gear box that send the rear driveshaft out is really in the way. Thanks for the tip, though. I did look at the kit on IPD.

JRL,
Is the rear cam sensor this round aluminum plate in this picture? Directly under the engine mount strut mount? I think this is where you were describing....it looks fairly dry. Some old, pretty dry gunk around it, but not a fresh leak. And the bottom of my turbo and my turbo oil return line were pretty wet, so I think the leak is the turbo oil return line gasket. I put a new topic out on that.....https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=41451
Cam sensor?

Thanks much for your time and everyone else's as well!

So, there I was, 11pm, kneeling on the engine block, left arm buried to reach below the turbo and get the top end of the turbo cooling hose off! Finally. Victory, or at least partially. Still have the lower end of that hose to get off, from below most likely. Then the other turbo cooling hose looks pretty easy, it is up top, along the back of the block. Going to change the hose from the bottom of the expansion tank, too.

Question: I drained almost exactly 1.40 gallons (I have a 1.4 gallon jug) of coolant. Drained radiator, engine block drain, and popped the turbo cooling line and drained from there as well. Capacity says 1.76 gal, and it was full when I started. Do I really have 0.36 gal (over a quart) still in there?

I did not get much coolant out of the engine drain, maybe a cup or slightly more. I ended up taking the brass/bronze fitting all the way out, just to see, and nothing more came out. Could it be clogged? Don't know if it has ever been opened...

More time under the car tonight.
Jim.
