1986 240 steering pump going out?

Hi-

I have had two instances where on hot days I turn into a parking lot and I can hear the groaning of something in the engine compartment while the steering wheel gets very hard to turn. When I come back out to the car, it acts as if nothing was ever wrong!

I need to know if it is my steering pump, or my rack going out. I just had the rack replaced with a refurbed one in 2010...

This happened again two days ago. The car rested and then no more groaning from the steering pump.

also- What's with the no response to my requests? Shall I go elsewhere?

Possibly no-one knew the answer to your problem!

When the rack was changed was all of the old fluid flushed?
Have you checked for air in the system?
As with auto box fluid power steering fluid can become burned. What colour is the fluid and does it smell of burning?
Is the drive belt tensioned correctly?

sorry for the grumbling... I guess I have a lot of problems that no one knows the answers to! 'This old car!'

I will check for the points you mentioned.
