A/C problem, shim fix won't help.

Post by oh-la-la »

Hi guys,
Ive been having A/C problem on my 850R. The compressor will engage and disengage every 5 sec. I've done the compressor shim fix but that doesn't help, even used a wooden stick to push the clutch while disengaging, that doesn't help either.
I'm assuming the A/C clutch is fine. What should cause this problem beside A/C clutch?
Thx guys

Low fluid will cause quick cycling. Try adding some R134a. If you have a gauge, check the pressure.

Thx for info.
I just got a refrigerant that comes with the pressure gauge and this is hoe it looks like.

Does it looks like low fluid in the system?
Thx

That's definitely short cycling and I'm not an expert, but it looks to me like the pressure is going too low when the compressor is on. As you add fluid, the pressure should go up and the "on" cycle should get longer. With the AC on high and the fluid full, the compressor should stay on for a minute or more at a time.

I had the exact same thing happen to me earlier this year on my '96 850 GLT... at best (usually the cycling was much quicker).

I'd re-shimmed last fall, and it fixed it for about 10 minutes then it was back to the constant cycling. Since winter was coming on, I waited until late this past spring to add a full can.

I have been enjoying the AC ever since.

Guys,
I just recharged the refrigerant, now low gauge reads at 25psi. AC engages abit longer, at max will run about 10-15sec. Now I can feel cold air when engages but the weird thing was it blows cold ONlY at max and hot air at any other positions. What should I do?
Thx u guys so much

25 psi is still low. I always shoot for something between 30 and 40 PSI depending on how hot it is. In the bay area you can go to the lower end of that scale.

MORE FREON!!!

It really won't take in *too* much. Another can should do the trick of getting you to around 35 psi. It won't really charge up more than that unless you stick the can in hot water or something.

+1 on adding more.

I picked up a recharge can at AutoZone that had a 'temperature range finder' built into the gague. You turn the finder to the outside temp to find the 'correct' fill pressure.

Head over to http://www.idqusa.com/proddetail.php?prod=345 and click on the 'How to video' to see what I'm talking about.
