Hideous vibration after renewing engine mounts

Post by Marcobrick »

I am gutted. I spent many hours doing work on my car the last few days including timing belt, PCV, hoses etc. I also replaced right hand engine mount (under the crank) and the rear hydraulic mount. The old mount looked fine, but I couldn't get the bolt through the upper torque bush when I replaced it. It was as if the engine were leaning too far back. So I replaced that rear mount and it's better, but I still have to pull the engine forward about a quarter inch to slip the bolt through. The vibes are very pronounced below 2000rpm and I can feel them quite strongly in the steering wheel which makes me partly suspect the new rear mount as it is perched on the steering rack. I have the torque bush in the right way around so I can't figure out why I can't just slip the bolt through. The only mount that is still original is the front hydraulic one, ALL the others have been replaced within the last 200 miles. Help! It's hideous to drive now, in fact it was smoother with all the broken mounts!

Replaced with what?
Stock OEM mounts. If you used POLY bushings these cars will vibrate

if they are too stiff they wont absorb and of the vibrations made by the engine. also if u have 1 old one left then everything could be forced ever so slightly out of position which i would think could easily lead to vibration.

new mounts are all rubber. Not a poly in sight after reading posts on the subject.

A word in defense of the Poly mounts: #3-4 years ago my top mount (egine to firewall) shredded (as is common) and I decided to try the poly from IPD. I've added about 40K miles in that time and have NO vibration issues. Never had with the poly. I had one installed on the lower trans mount too. Same deal. Maybe engine mounts are different, but these guys (top and bottom) are getting a bad rap.

I agree and disagree. I've used them over a year, and it seems in hotter weather, the vibration tends to be less BUT wait til winter comes around! In the cold, they absolutely do vibrate after initial start-up. Overall, I am happy with their performance (Polys)

As an update, the vibration abates somewhat when the engine is heat soaked for example after a 30 minute drive. I think I will replace the front hydraulic mount and then at least I know all the mounts are brand new.

Replaced the front hyd. mount yesterday. Quite easy I found with the fan removed. The new one was a good half inch taller than the old one.
I have now replaced EVERY engine mount and bush with brand new. No poly bushes were fitted. It still buzzes! It's tolerable when the engine has been at operating temp for more than 20 minutes but still nothing like as smooth as my sedan with the same mileage and original mounts except for top engine torque bush.
Is there a break in period with new bushes? (sounds silly even as I type it)

I replaced my upper rear torque mount(at the firewall) and it has a vibration it didn't have! But it's better than the loud thump sound every time I accelerated!
