Key won't turn in ignition

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Key won't turn in ignition

Post by dcarlson12 »

99 S80 T6 about 130,000 miles:

Wife calls me from parking lot at about 10:00 pm tonight. She can't turn the key in the ignition.
Correct me if I am mistaken but if it was a problem with the immobilizer ring/antenna, then one should still be able to turn the key right?
If that is so, then is it safe to spray silicon lubricant into the ignition switch? i.e. is it just a problem of sticky/dry 'pins' inside the ignition switch? Or would silicon spray cause problems with any electrical contacts/switch surfaces inside the ignition switch.
The car has been left in the parking lot and I picked up my wife with a different vehicle and we started to discuss selling this thing. :(
I tried tow other keys and same result.
Didn't want to try silicon spray until I am sure it will do not harm.

Is the steering wheel locked in place? When my key wouldn't turn my steeringwheel was locked in place. Had to turn the s/w a little to kinda unlock it and was able to get the key to start the car. try to turn just a little whichever way it could be locked. hope this helps.

No, that was not the problem. Had to get it towed to the stealership and they installed an new switch 'tumbler' mechanism. It cost about $500. Crap. I asked what warranty. Was told 2 years. But since the old one lasted 12 years, I guess I should be good to go for a while.

In the future if anyone else has a lock cylinder issue, we can order coded locks and dropship them direct to you. They normally sell for $276.44 for P2 cars, we sell them for $221, free shipping and no tax (outside ca). Takes about 3-4 days for them to be made in Germany.
