Still have Antifreeze leak

Post by sealuva »

I recently changed the radiator on my 98 S70. Fun.. It eliminated my leak from the cracked old one. I also replaced the thermostat and the ETC sensor. Now I see it leaking fluid dripping more towards the center a bit behind the engine. It seems I can never get it all done. It's driving me crazy. At first I thought it was condensation from the AC, but soon saw the color and the amount on the floor of my garage and the reservoir keeps getting lower and lower again. Frustrating to say the least. Anyone else have this happen?

Is it a turbo model?

My best advice would be to get up under it and see where it's coming from.

Expansion tanks and turbo coolant hoses are notorious for leaking on all of them. Water pumps can leak, but they don't do it often (that would be directly under the timing belt on the pass. side of the engine). Heater hoses don't leak much, but that's also a possibility.

I hope you replaced both the upper and lower radiator lines when you did the radiator. Those are very cheap insurance and something often overlooked, but I've had many blow up on me on older cars.

I did not replace them, but I didn't see it coming from that. I couldn't figure it out. This is a none turbo model as well. This stinks.

Lift up the coolant tank off your fender and look at the hose that connects it to the back of the engine block.

This bottom port is one that cracks often, or the hose might need to be changed out.

It also could be the junction on the firewall that connects the heater core. I have to take a good look at that on mine soon.

Check the return hose from the heater core. Mine was leaking in the same area as yours and that was what it turned out to be. It was hard to detect at first since the coolant was travelling down the block, but it sounds similar.

Thanks for the post. Where is that return hose so I can check it today. I'm a novice.

They attach into the firewall on the drivers side of the car. These two brown pipes you can see at the top of the picture here:

So are you saying it might be the black hoses going to the two brown pipes?
