ABS Module repair, who to use?

Post by Tall Grille »

I bought my wife a 1998 V70 GLT in March. The car has been running decent, but has a few issues that I am just now getting to deal with, One is the ABS Module needs repair. It was bad when I bought the car and this is one of the reasons I got a good deal on the car. Previous owner had it quoted at the dealer and got scared and sold the car cheap. I pulled the module out today and I was going to send it out for repair, I see a few options on E-Bay for repair places. Is there any one that is recommended over another? I saw the DIY for this repair, I am a decent backyard mechanic but electronics are not my thing so I would rather pay for this job.

Thanks for the link, but how come I only see 96-97 850 listed? Don't 93-95 cars have an ABS module?

'93-'95 abs modules are built preety solid and they don't have that "manufacturer error" which is called a cold solder.

On '96-'99 and up models there are two types of abs/tracs modules. The ones which failed and the ones which will fail, that's just the matter of time.

Usually, when abs modules on '93-'95 models go bad-they are history.

For the rebuild you can do that youself if you know how to solder or just take the module to a nearest reputable Tv service/repair shop.

Yes,you read this correct...to a tv service/repair shop.

That's what i did with mine.I took the module to my friend who repairs tv's,dvd's,stereos...etc and he did resoldering thing for me.Then i re-sealed it ,leaved it overnight to dry and installed it.No problems since.

Exactly what he said regarding the 93-95 units.

One more thing...when looking for parts, never go to eBay first. And that's coming from somebody that's fairly active in selling there. The regulars on the forums can point you to the best places. Way too much "fly by night" action on eBay, and way too many substandard replacement parts.

I'd say 98% of my eBay business is from people that don't even know what a forum or BB is, let alone know that there are a few Volvo forums loaded with tons of useful info. And...a solid 85% of my problem transactions have been from eBay.

Tall Grille,
Send it to Matty Moo. His banner says $60, but it's really $90, but still a good value. He'll guarantee it for life. Pretty good deal. You'll have to take yours out, but the good thing is that he'll send you his first. Do the swap and send yours to him.
At least that's what I did and it has worked out very well.

I did an ABS swap with Matty Moo for a 98 v70 a few weeks ago and everything was perfect. One thing to consider, it that it seems he has done many of these and knows the right way to do it. Have a friend solder it and run the risk of something not being done 100% and having to pull the module out again.
