Control Module vs. Throttle Module (ECM vs. ETM)

Post by fishfool »

All,

Need some help in countering my customer service rep's argument on $1600 I paid for getting my ETM fixed.

He said based on the error codes they received (901E, 903F, and 903C) for an ETM failure, they recplaced my control module NOT my throttle module. Since the control module is not under the extended warrany program, I have no recourse in getting a rebate even though the symptoms are identical to the problems everyone is experiencing.

Can I get some help for someone who understands these error codes and advise me if they are full of it or if the fix was accurate?

Thanks,
Fishfool

ETM, ETS, ECM .... I thought they were all the same thing, or components of the same thing?

I thought it was all the same too but the dealer says the error code (ECM-901E) tells them to replace the control module which isnt under the warranty program. I'm trying to figure out if its all related and that they changed out the wrong part.

Fishfool,
We need more info from you. Which Volvo, year, model? Did the problem repeat or was it one solid failure? Was the code reset and then reoccurred?

For an S80 T6, there is a dealer procedure posted by Don Willson here: http://www.vexedvolvo.org/ which tells the dealer to follow the 901E code first for your code combination. That code calls out the control module first, then the ETM.
The 901E does indeed blame the control module, BUT, 903F and 903C call out the ETM itself. If it fails again, you should get the whole thing covered by Volvo after they replace the ETM, IMHO. Keep us advised.

ETM = electronic throttle module

ETS = electronic throttle system, the ETM and the accelerator

ECM = electronic control module, the master computer

Whatever you do, if you have to pay for the repair demand that you are given the part. It is yours and by law you are entitled to it. If they say there is a core charge that is probably the service managers retirement fund.

Yes, I'm having a similiar argument with my dealer at the moment. 3 weeks earlier I had the car serviced due to "Service Transmission" and "check engine" warning lights. They charged me $340 for a "software upgrade" to the TCM. 3 weeks later, they replaced my ETM for no charge after I started having performance problems.

The ETM fix didn't work, so now they are replacing my transmission and want me to pay a $200 deductible (I'm in an Extended Warranty Period). I'm arguing that I should not pay the deductible and should be refunded the prior $340 as I believe all of these problems are stemming from the ETM (Although I can't prove that at the moment)
