hi newbi here and to volvo ownership. i have a problem :(

hi guys i am new here and am after some advice. i have just bought a v70 d5 which drives lovely but when i am slowing down coming to a junction or dipping the clutch there is an almighty high pitch squeal coming from what sounds like the right hand side of the engine.? now when i aam accelerating and the engine is under load it dosent squeal at all?????
i seem to find aswell that if i put the air con on it makes it better ??
any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Have you checked the serpentine belt? That would be my first guess.

I would try belt dressing from what you're describing. It will likely help if the belt id loose at idle speeds. Look closely at the belt for wear and cracks. If the belt breaks, you'll be stranded.

Oooh! Oooh! I know this one! "Belt dressing" is something you put on a car's belt to help reduce squeaks and squeals. It comes in both spray cans and in little packets of liquid. In the states it's easy to pick up, often in little packets at the checkout area of an auto parts store like AutoZone. Don't SOAK the belt with it, use as little as possible (you can always add more).

But if the belt shows wear or cracks or splits you do need to have it replaced. Dressing is only a short term fix.

And the serpentine belt is visible from the passenger side of the engine compartment. It wraps around (and runs) the power steering pump, alternator, and air conditoner compressor.
