I have a 1993 Volvo 850 that I bought without the keyless entry remotes. Is there a way to just buy new ones and program them or do I have to buy an aftermarket keyless system?
Central locking does work on the car.

If the car has the remote receiver you can just buy the keyfobs and program them - which is very easy.
To determine if you have the remote receiver or not you need to remove the glove box and look along the A-pillar for the receiver box. This one is upside down but it is in the correct location.
If you have the receiver get the part number and FCC identifier off of the receiver so that you can get the matching remotes. There are two different models that look identical but they don't work unless they are the same series.

It is indeed that box but ignore all of the big numbers on it - look at the smaller numbers that specifically are called out as PN and FCC. Those numbers are often covered with tape.alexk243 wrote:Awesome, Thanks. I am assuming the box with the "A" on it is the receiver box.

I just purchased a new pair of transmitters from this seller ---> mykeyless-1 on ebay. The transaction went well and they were new and they did program to my car 33.00 shipped for the pair. It seemed a little cheap but they work great. Just make sure you give them the FCC number on that black box in the glove compartment. Do not follow their programming instructions though. For my 95 850 I had to cycle the key to "ON" 5 times and even then I ended up disconnecting the battery a few days later to get the lock button to work. It programmed ok with the unlock but wouldn't lock. Killed the battery by mistake and when I charged it back up both transmitters and both lock and unlock worked. I was happy!

Question to Ozark Lee:
That photo you posted earlier showing the keyless receiver black box to the right inside the glove box, is there an alternate location for it? I'm trying to locate my receiver in my 1997 model 850 and there is a big blank space there. Can't locate the box but I know I have one because my key fob has been locking/unlocking my doors until just recently. I'm pretty sure it's the receiver since both fobs suddenly quit working.

On the '97 models I think they moved the receiver to the instrument cluster. The 850s in my fleet all end at '96 so I can't tell you for sure.
