Headlight Swap Upgrade from dual sealed to 1990 h4 style

Post by skifasttakechances »

Basically, I needed to fix my turn signals and running light, and Decided to get both lighting assemblies off a 1990 Volvo 740.

As you can see my 740 with dual sealed beam lights the housings don't hold up well and in the junkyards the situation wasn't much better, The lights I found on the 1990 740 were in really good shape compared to anything I have seen. I really want to do this primarily to have housings that aren't cracked open and damaged looking. I read a few articles about redoing the relays to get more voltage to the headlights, I'd rather not attempt that for starters.

What I'm wondering is for the sealed beams to connect to the h4 style bulb on the new housings, Do I just wire the Positives together? and splice them into one of the H4 + leads?

The four headlight system had white/red to the right hand high beam and white/blue to the left hand high beam. These two wires branched to the second headlight on either side. You don't need to keep the two branch wires as they are redundant. Cut them and tape the ends to make them safe.

The two headlight system uses the same wiring colours as the older one so you just need to splice them to the H4 connectors.

Looks like the wiring is the least of the problems. :(

I would need to drill 2 holes on each fender, and probably tap the correct threading in for the side marker assembly mounts and
enlarge the center fitting for the side marker housings.

Then find some holes with the center grill mounting brackets.(This seamed more straightforward since there are alot of bolts in the correct general area)
Also the bumper does seem to have a tighter clearance with the bottom molding trim of the 1990 style rectangular beam headlights.

Well I might be ebaying these headlight assemblies soon, to fund replacement lenses..
