1991 740 heater hose in line valve

Hi
There is an in-line valve on my heater hose (91 740}which I broke when changing hose.
No idea of its name or what is does other than it opens and closes, having an electric connection going to it.

I have temporary bypassed this valve till I get another.
Is it ok to drive without it for abit?
And what does it do.
Replacement valve is $45.00

Depending on what you refer to as bypass,You may not have any control over the flow of coolant going through the heater core resulting in a very warm heater at a time when the heater is not needed.

It is very inexpensive part. Best to replace hoses and the heater control valve all in one shot. This is not exactly a fun job as access is lousy. I recommend Volvo heater hoses for longevity, and I have heard good things about Four seasons brand heater control valve. Avoid other aftermarket brands. ( had one which failed after one year.) Do not be complacent; this is really a very important area of your cooling system. If your hose or valve goes unexpectedly, expect your engine to become solid block within minutes.

Then it is new car time.

Ok thanks. I will buy a new valve. It was abit tough getting at the heater hose clamp that hides well but finally got it.
