s70 tires: MXV4, CV95, Pirelli P6, or Kumho ECSTA ASX ?

Post by silver99s70 »

Hello Everyone,
Shopping for the 4th set of tires for the 99 s70. Averaged ~35K miles per set with the Michelin MXV4 Plus. Just had to ask before laying down another $600-$650, if anyone has had good luck with the Pirelli P6 Four Season, Continental ContiTouring CV95, or the unbelieveably inexpensive Kumho ECSTA ASX (~$46.00 ea) ?
For comparisons sake consider Chicago area climate requirements: dry, wet, light to moderate snow.
All of the above tires follow OEM rec's of 88V load/speed rating, which I'm trying to stay with. Considering an H rated tire would open up many more options including saving ~$30 per tire on the exact model Michelin's.
I should add, for the v-rated Michelin's, that I've never had a sidewall bubble, or blown a tire, despite hitting several monster potholes. Not sure if the H rated tires would hold up as well.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks.

H rated will work if your not going to push the limits. I have used a Goodyear "economy" tires that worked well (I don't remember the name). Had a set of Pirelli that were good tires - nothing exceptional. I also had a set of Toyo that were complete crap - they were great for the first 18K but got hard after 2 years and I pulled them off with 25% tredlife left at 24K miles because they lost their grip. I also gave the car to my daughter so I put a set of MXV4s that I am very happy with (except for the price). I have gotten between 24K and 40K on the various tires.

You will usually get what you pay for. If you are goping to put city miles on a car and not push it the H rated tires are fine. If you are going to put a lot of highway miles a set of touring tires are the answer. If you are going to push the performance limits of the car DON'T take any shortcuts with a non-performance tire.

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

I'd go with none of the choices above. My favorite tires on my S70 as well as my wife's '04 V70 and earlier 850 was and still is the Bridgestone Turanza LS-H or LS-V. Check them out on the www.tirerack.com for ratings, prices, etc. I always buy from them with great service and results. Here's a specific link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... s&place=11
I know they're touring tires, but don't let that throw you. These are truly the best all around tire I've found for the price and the feel is perfect on our cars!

Thank you: Made_In_Japan and T2 for the info.

MIJ: I saw those Turanza's and the tread design just looks great- then I check sizes and they don't have 195/60 R15 (for the dreaded base steel wheel), so I thought I was out of luck. Do you have 16" wheels on your vehicles ?

I also saw they have a 205/55 R15 which I thought might work (just slightly smaller effective height), but for some reason they make it in a 87 load rating instead of an 88 (the OEM on mine), which isn't that much weight capacity difference, but another rule to sidestep.

Yes, mine are 16's. One digit on the load rating really won't make that much difference. Some nice 16's on eBay right now for great prices if you want to upgrade!
